Dan Kimmel, Director of Sales at Doherty Career Solutions, describes success with creative resumes
News Transcript
With so many people looking for work right now, it's hard to stand out from the crowd. That's the challenge an unemployed Woodbury mom is facing right now. But as John Laurenson shows us, her family is using their best assets to get her noticed.
Jerome Gerber: "What's one word that describes your mommy, Maddie?"
Maddie: "Um, she likes me!"
At first glance, this looks like another family video with a couple of youngsters babbling happily about their mom. Alex: "My mom kicks butt! Mom is my hero!" And initially that's exactly what it was but after Jerome Gerber heard what his kids had to say about their mother, he thought it might actually help his wife find a job.
Jerome: "It was actually not designed to be any sort of video resume, it was more to be a 'let's cheer up mom' 'let's put something out on Facebook'." After nine years as a Human Resources Manager, Angie Gerber was laid off from her job in February. Since then she has been looking for work with no luck. But that was before her kids, seven-year-old Alex and three-year-old Maddie, became references.
In this three minute video, they talk about her talents. At one point, her son, Alex, says she is his third favorite person, after God and Jesus. Angie: "I can't beat those two so I'll go with number three."
The video was shot in 15 minutes, edited in 30 and posted on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter, with Angie's contact information added at the end. After two days, it had more than 500 total hits. Angie: "At first, I thought it was just something to make me laugh but now due to the attention and the hits it's getting, I'm hoping it does lead somewhere to a new position for me."
Dan: "That's pretty creative. That's something different..." Dan Kimmel of Doherty Career Solutions thinks it could. He says now, more than ever, it's important for job seekers to stand out and using your two greatest assets is a good way to do it. Dan: "The bottom line is she got noticed, um, she's gonna be on WCCO-TV so it's safe to say everyone in the state knows there's an HR manager that's looking for work. It certainly ups her odds of finding a job."
Alex: "Hire my mommy!" Maddie: "Hire my mommy!" Alex: "Amen." Maddie: "Amen."
Alright, I love it. Cute! Their mommy kicks butt! Kimmell says that creative videos like this one won't get you hired, but they sure will get you noticed. And I just found out you did something pretty unusual. Sent cookies to get the interview. I did end up with the job. And it worked. It worked!
Yours didn't work as well did it? Not so much! No. They say a lot more people are doing that...sending cookies, doing YouTube and just kind of being creative in general. And they're also going back to old school methods as well...really simple things.
