Hello and thanks for choosing CCO. More than 60,000 jobs lost today, but don't lose faith. We've got three tips to layoff-proof your career.
Shock and pink slips across America as thousands of employees learn they're out of a job. The layoffs are at more than a half dozen companies, some here in Minnesota. Companies laid off more than 68,000 workers today. They include 7,000 at Home Depot, 8,000 at Sprint and 100 at HCMC here in Minnesota. The cuts are even making people with so called "secure" jobs think twice. But there are some ways to keep your job safe. John Lauritsen shows us three tips to lay-off proof your career.
It seems that lately the pink slip pandemic is hitting a little too close to home. Rachel Filippi: "My co-worker's daughter just got laid off today. Last week, they told her she was safe. She's been with this company for nine years and today she has no job."
Jeff Lorenzen: "Just have to kinda hope that the next round isn't you I guess, or anyone else for that matter." You already know it's tough out there, but if you do have a job right now what can you do to make sure you won't be next?"
Michele Jiosne: "You need to make a valuable face time..." Michele Jiosne works for Doherty Employer Services and lately she has seen far too many employers making tough decisions. So she says to throw out the "out of site, out of mind" approach to avoiding your boss that many people take and create some time for them to get to know you by bringing ideas to the table. "So coming in with your ideas on a cost-savings opportunity for example would be a great example of creating more valuable face time with your manager."
Besides making yourself visible, Jiosne suggests going above and beyond by volunteering for assignments and helping co-workers. And she stands by the old adage, come early, stay late. Even by doing all of this, Jiosne still can't completely guarantee job security. Michele: "One of my philosophies is that everything happens for a reason and you may not realize it today but something better will be coming down the road for you."
Other tips for job-proofing include networking non-stop and not burning bridges. Even when you have a job, Jiosne says you should be keeping in touch with past employers because you just never know. And obviously now is not the time to get on your boss' bad side. She says put a smile on your face and come to work happy, as painful as that might be some days, Don.
