TIM DOHERTY RECOGNIZED BY PEO INDUSTRY FOR LEADERSHIP AND VISION

Minneapolis, MN – October 19, 2009. Timothy E. Doherty, owner and chairman of Minneapolis-based Doherty Employment Group, was honored with the National Association of Professional Employer Organizations’ Michaeline A. Doyle award for his visionary leadership, education of PEO to the marketplace and established business practices in the growing $68 billion PEO (professional employer organization) industry.

Doherty is one of only fifteen recipients to ever have received this top honor, which was presented during the National Association of Professional Employer Organizations’ (NAPEO’s) annual conference. This annual award honors the late Michaeline A. Doyle, one of the pioneers of the 25 year-old PEO industry and former NAPEO board member.

Doherty has a remarkable record of service to the PEO industry starting with the founding of Doherty Employer Services in 1993. Doherty Employer Services was one of the first Minnesota-based companies offering PEO services to companies nationwide.

The award was named in honor of Michaeline A. Doyle. Doyle was devoted to the education and professional development of the PEO industry, which currently serves approximately 3 million working Americans in small and medium-sized businesses outsourcing everything from administering the payroll and paying employment related taxes, to risk management, recruiting, providing HR consulting and employee benefits, and securing workers' compensation coverage.

Timothy Doherty has been influential in creating a regulatory framework for the PEO industry including strengthening accreditation through ESAC (Employer Services Assurance Corporation). ESAC provides an unprecedented level of value to small business owners who are seeking assurance regarding their service provider’s performance of its contractual obligations and holding the PEO to the highest standards of internal controls, integrity, and operational excellence.

“Known for his casual and attentive manner, he is regarded as a thinker, always considering the long-term effects of the industry’s actions beyond the immediate concerns,” said David Day, president of Management 2000 and NAPEO’s Midwest Leadership Council, as he announced the award. “His contributions to the industry are many. He has left lasting impressions by taking on the image and reputation of the industry to build PEO market share. With his leadership, strategic plans were put into place to address fundamental perceptions and concerns on both the state and national levels to promote a favorable industry image.”

Timothy holds a BS degree in Business from the University of Minnesota. Tim is past national President of both NAPEO and ESAC. In addition, he served as national President of the American Staffing Association (ASA) from 1996 - 1997. Along with his wife, Valerie, Tim was awarded the 2008 University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management’s Entrepreneurs of the Year award.
